Next-generation BMW M5 to produce in the excess of 600-hp

2009 BMW M5

The current 2009 BMW M5 produces an outstanding 500-hp from its 5.0L V10 engine. However, Audi’s RS6 has now stepped up the game with a twin-turbo V10 that makes a neck-snapping 580-hp and Mercedes-Benz’s 2010 E63 AMG now pumps out 518-hp.

Well, BMW won’t take it anymore. Starting with the next-generation M5, BMW will use a new uprated version of the 555-hp 4.4L twin turbo found under the hood of the BMW X6 M and the BMW X5 M. Sources say that the M5 will pair the engine to an F1-style KERS system that will help produce in the excess of 600-hp.

The new M5 will also care a little about fuel-economy using a new system that shuts down cylinders when they are not needed.

We’ll get more information next year.

X, Y, Z Series: So, what’s Y Series and where could it fit?

What started last week as a simple rumor, it turned out today to be more than just that. According to sources close to BMW, the company is indeed exploring this idea and looking to vizualize where such model will fit in. The Y models could become a hybrid of two other popular series: the sports activity X vehicles and the sporty, dynamic Z roadsters.

Since many of you left comments yesterday inquiring more about this rumored Y1 model, we had to do some digging and once again, Scott from GCZ, comes to shed some light.  After reading his short description of “what, where and why”, the Y Series sounds pretty damn good to us. Sure, it’s still a long shot and the project might get squashed as many other before, but hey…allow us to be excited for a moment. And that excitement also comes from the fact that the auto industry is changing, evolving and innovating.

We know that changes are tough, harsh on people and most of the time rejected, but we have to look forward to the future and the way we look at cars, or even how we use them.

BMW X-coupe

BMW X Coupe Concept featured here

The X series identifies the range of Sport Activity Vehicles , such as X5 , X3 , X6 and very soon the X1.
The Z series identifies the range of Sporting Roadsters namely the Z4 but in the future the Z2.
Where does Y come into play.

It has been identified that certain customers were looking for something more sporting with their SAV’s, Which although the liked the X5 there was something missing in regards to how the X5 was anonymous in concept along with the X5’s competitors. One shape for each marque which brought the question for the purpose of the X6 The Worlds first Sport Activity Coupe.

Even after the introduction of the BMW X6 some customers have been identified who might want a bit more identity and creativity with a Sport Activity Coupe. Something with two doors rather than three an interesting new concept of Sport Activity Coupe which would be dynamic , lighter and more personal as a smaller Sport Activity Coupe.

Identified as a Concept and a creative idea. The Y series aims to be the hybrid of an X with the aura of a Z model. By being based within the the 1er portfolio BMW can be very cost efficient with an entirely new concept of car . First proposals showcase a small sedan like coupe shape with a raised driving position but not to much ground clearence. The Glasshouse is very shallow with a glass solar roof that will in theory retract down to the rear windshield offering a wide open Targa style roof.
Solar technology will be introduced on the next generation 1er as an Efficient Dynamics feature.

When it was shown , many recoiled in horror but in truth the DNA of the BMW Xcoupe Concept can be found in not only both incarnations of the Z4 Roadster but also the BMW X6. The idea of a combination of an X vehicle with the looks of a small coupe or roadster has been very much on the agenda since the Xcoupe was unveiled. Strictly billed as a niche model , not a volume model would help the Y create a key market as a unique unconventional choice as seen with the X6.

Although strictly as a two seater , the interior will be very sport orientated and feature such materials such as neoprene and synthetic shark skin type stretched materials like a zepplin shell over an all aluminum dashboard and the structure of the two seats..

In the future BMW will set out to gain focus on such a idea with a design concept in the near future, Ii the idea is well received then expect to see the Y on the roads in a few years time. For now it is a proposal of creativity.

And more thoughts on this:

We have identified customers who are interested in the Sports Activity Coupe Concept with more attention to compact and sportyness rather than a large coupe. It is here the Y1 will succeed because of it’s intentions it’s a hybrid of the X and Z series it wont be as raised as a conventional BMW SAV but it will have the looks of a Z series meaning strictly for two but with a very dynamic looking appearence.

Many have always liked the idea of a Xcoupe , but marketing were pushing for a larger premium models. The Y will strictly become a member of the 1er family .
BMW have now seen the need for expansion in your smaller , compact segment , because we are at the stage certainly in the current economic climate where downsizing is frequent and after the economic climate passes customers both old and new will be look for exciting more compact cars.
We have to think about the future and what will happen to the SAV? Y1 is an interpretaion of how we can think along those lines , new customers will evolve and want more versatility in their cars , these are future customers that today are being instructed on the environmental effect in regards to hybrids and electric powered automobiles.

Y1 will be a very dynamic car to drive and is purely aimed at young customers. As part of the next phase of Efficient Dynamics - Solar roofs will be featured to enable areas of the car to be regenerated. The Y1 will get a unique sliding Targa roof that will provide maximum exposure for the passenger compartment .

There are customers for every type of vehicle BMW offers . Even though the media claimed the X6 was a step too far we have proven them wrong and have outfooted our competitors but we know that in Design studios at Audi , Porsche and Mercedes-Benz they have there own interpretations of a Sport Activity Coupe ready to go and when things get clearer economically they will come to light.
There are customers for the 5er GT as there will be a customer base for the X1 plus there will still be customers for core models such as the 3er , 5er and so on.

Xcoupe always had a future but at BMW we like things to progress slowly we like to understand and we like to showcase creativity for the customer.
Everything begins with a clean sheet of paper but are never rushed , ideas that mature longer . We did say in 2001 that you will see this car on the road sometime in the future. Now almost a decade later that future is almost here.

BMW X5 M: Real life photos

BMW North America is hosting their complimentary M Power Tour street drive in different locations across United States. Yesterday, the M Power Tour stopped in the beautiful San Francisco where  people attending had the opportunity to do a 25-minute street drive in a 2009 BMW M3.

Part of M Power Tour events, BMW will display their first xDrive Motorsport models ever built: the BMW X5 M and X6 M. Courtesy of Rboosted717, a member of Xoutpost, we have some real life photos X5M/X6M photos to share with you. Also, in a conversation with a BMW M specialist, he learned that the X5M/X6M models will have three special colors: red, blue and black, but the standard color pallet will also be available.

The next M Power Tour event will take place this Saturday and Sunday, June 6-7, at the BMW Designworks USA headquarters in Newbury Park, CA.

There is also another thing we would like to share with you. Last month, BMW’s European Delivery desk informed us that for those U.S. customers interested in taking delivery of a BMW at the Welt Center in Munich, they will automatically receive a free M track day behind the X5M/X6M models in Salzburg, Austria.

The first U.S. xDrive M models will be available in October. The BMW X5 M has a base price of $85,400 while the X6 M is priced at $88,900.

2009 BMW X5 - Review

BMW’s X5 was one of the first to prove that a truck could dance through the twisties and reward an enthusiastic driver. It was a practical, four-season people mover that drove like a proper Bimmer. Granted, that first-generation “Sports Activity Vehicle,” which debuted in 1999, also was a bit firm in the suspenders and lacked the cavernous cargo area of more traditional SUVs. And so the second-generation X5 attempts to address those ills with a more compliant, yet still taut suspension and nearly eight inches of added length to accommodate an optional third row of seats. While the addition of the X5 xDrive35d and its 265-hp, 3.0-liter turbo-diesel is the primary change for 2009—stay tuned for more on that model—we decided to take another look at the top-level xDrive48i outfitted with BMW’s 350-hp, 4.8-liter V-8.

Performance is Relative, Even for a BMW

The last V-8 X5 we evaluated was similar to this particular example, albeit slightly less expensive due to the lack of the $3700 Sport package found on our tester. While this model rolled on 19-inch all-season rubber versus the 20-inch summer-tire option, the addition of BMW’s Electronic Damping Control suspension and sport seats/steering wheel made tossing around the 5200-lb behemoth rather pleasant. The feel from the helm is reminiscent of that in our long-term X6 xDrive50i, yet the absence of the X6’s torque-vectoring rear axle and twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V-8—both of which we expect to migrate to the X5 relatively soon—make the seven-seater a mite less playful, and slower.

G-Power BMW M3 Tornado gets 500-hp

G-Power has given the world some outstanding modified BMW vehicles including the M6 Hurricane, X5 Tycoon, M5 Hurricane and G4 EVO III Z4. Now, G-Power has set its sights on the new BMW M3 and has introduced, what they call, the G-Power M3 Tornado.

G-Power used a soft charging with just 0.3 bar boost, which increases output of the M3 to 500-hp with a maximum torque of 354 lb-ft. The boost of extra power comes from a G-Power supercharger system, the T1-518 ASA centrifugal supercharger. That very supercharger is also used by Alpina on the B5S, B6S and the B7.

All that extra power allows the M3 Tornado to go from 0 to 124 mph in 13.5 seconds and lets you keep going above 200 mph.

Press Release:

Supercharger system provides the BMW M3 with 500 hp and a top speed of more than 320 km/h

For the current BMW M3, G-POWER offers an exquisite supercharger system that sets new standards in regards of design, quality and performance. Using gentle soft charging with just 0,3 bar (relative) boost, the output of the V8 engine is pushed from 420 hp to 500 hp and the torque increases from 400 Nm up to 480 Nm.

After 9 months of intensive development, starting with the CAD design, followed by prototyping and completed with test drives and hot climate tests in the United Arab Emirates, the result is awesome.

500 hp and 480 Nm of torque, achieved through gentle soft charging with just 0,3 bar (relative) boost, let the BMW M3 appear completely changed. Already from 3.000 rpm on the supercharged G-POWER M3 TORNADO pulls like the standard BMW M3 revving twice as much, but than the G-POWER M3 TORNADO really starts to flex its muscles: from 5.000 rpm on until redline the G-POWER M3 TORNADO provides constantly about 20 % more torque than the factory car, this provides an acceleration that feels like being dragged by a bungee cord.

This output explosion is based on the heart of the G-POWER supercharger system, the all new T1-518 ASA centrifugal supercharger. By the way the ASA superchargers are being used in the ALPINA models B5S, B6S and B7 as well, just like the ALPINA B6 GT3 race car, in witch the chargers could state there impressive quality and reliability during 3.500 km in the “Green Hell” of the Nürburgring at the 24th hour race on may 23rd and 24th!

The exclusive use of components meeting OEM standards is one of the basic elements of the G-POWER philosophy and one of the secrets for the extraordinary quality, reliability and performance of the G-POWER products.

For its mission in the G-POWER M3 TORNADO the ASA T1-518 has been literally been tailor-made, to provide the giant need for fresh air of the up to 8.300 rpm revving 4.0 litre V8 engine. But the ASA supercharger, flanged to the engine using a CNC-milled high-strength mount, is not the only high-tech component of the G-POWER M3 supercharger system. The engineers did not spare any cost or efforts during the development of this supercharger system. Amongst others they even did a sophisticated, computer aided simulation which analyses the conditions of the air-ducting engine parts. The defined goal of this extensive research is to improve the efficiency of the G-POWER supercharger system to the best possible performance. And the result proofs us right. The G-POWER supercharger system is capable of reducing the specific fuel consumption of the engine. This shows that we do not only care about performance but are concerned of the sensitive use of restricted resources like fuel, as well.

A further key figure, next to the supercharger, in the G-POWER supercharger system is the complete aluminium cast, large volume air box, including 8 lightweight integral resonance induction pipes, that is responsible for the perfect throttle response and optimal torque curve. The G-POWER M3 supercharger system is completed by the large air-to-air intercooler that is located in the vehicles front, which cools the boost temperature down to an output optimal level under all circumstances.

Of course the performance figures benefit from this huge output improvement. The figure from stand still to 200 km/h improves from 15,8 seconds (stock, 6-speed manual) to 13,5 seconds (SKI).

On demand we can enable an unlimited top speed according to the capacity of the tyres. In combination with the 20 inch G-POWER SILVERSTONE DIAMOND wheels and the MICHELIN Pilot Sport tyres in the dimension 255/30 ZR 20 and 295/25 ZR 20, a top speed of more than 320 km/h can be achieved. Especially designed for the BMW models, the G-POWER SILVERSTONE Alloy Wheel forms a contrast to the great mass of other aftermarket wheels, due to the successful combination of double spokes and the “concave design” typical of G-POWER. The G-POWER “diamond cut” provides for the fascinating dynamic appearance of the G-POWER SILVESTONE rim, in contrast to the silver-graphite coated rim body and the bolt applications of stainless steel. An additional feature of the G-POWER SILVERSTONE rim is its weight-optimised design that allows a low rim weight with the same stability, compared to other standard wheels. A perceptibly improved impression of convenience and a considerably increased agility accompany the minimisation of the unsprung mass: advantages of the G-POWER SILVERSTONE rim, which you can factually experience above all in connection with low-profile tyres. Further improvement of the road handling is realized through the continuously height-adjustable G-POWER coil-over suspension G3M-RS with nine selectable settings each for bound and rebound.

Next to the output and the suspension of the BMW M3, G-POWER has taken care of the sound, as well. The G-POWER 4-trim sport rear muffler with its 4 x 83 mm tailpipes gives the BMW V8 a deep, throaty sound that turns heads but is at now time annoying. The G-POWER M3 rear muffler is available made from stainless steel or completely out of Titanium which is 14,5 kg lighter than the factory part.

The interior is upgraded by G-POWER with precious carbon panels, a speedometer with G-POWER logo scaled to 360 km/h, a sporty aluminium pedal set and on demand a tailor-made leather interior. The exclusivity of each G-POWER M3 TORNAD is documented with a special badge in the interior and on the supercharger system that features the G-POWER serial number.

NO, this is not the BMW M7, it’s a 7 Series with the M-Sport Package

We don’t usually get frustrated with BMW related news and we enjoy reading them from different sources as well, but when the same topic comes up twice in a week, we feel that we have to step in and clarify them.

Last week, some photos of the supposed BMW M7 made their way onto the web and everyone jumped to report that we are looking at the first Motorsport model based on the 7 Series. We obviously didn’t fall for it, for several reason and we immediately reported that we are looking at a 7 Series model featuring the M Sport Package which will be released later this year.

2011_bmw_m7_7_series_spy_shots_june_003-0602-950x650

You might wonder what these reasons were, well, no worries, we’ll explain them to you right now.

First, there was never a solid report, rumor, that BMW is indeed actively looking at an M7 model. If they were, trust us, we would have heard about it.

Second, the photos posted today and last week, clearly show a prototype with very little to none camouflage. Knowing BMW and the way the protect their designs from spy photographers, they would have never released the M7 out in the open like that. The M7 would have been a “hot car” and it would have probably worn like 10 sheets of fake plastic on top of it.

Third, let’s examine the car closer. All we can see right now pointing to an M7 would be the front-bumper, BUT THAT”S ABOUT IT, and even the more aggressive bumper doesn’t fit the profile of an M car. There are no other M design elements on this car, not the famous M gills or the “fearful” hood.

Now, in our opinion, judging from the covered bulge on the hood, we believe we are looking at the 7 Series Hybrid which will be released later this year. That bulge has been a trademark on most of the hybrid spy photos we have seen so far, from the X5 Hybrid to the upcoming X6 ActiveHybrid.

So, can we please move on now? When there will be talks of an M7, we promise you that will be one of the first publications to report them.

P.S. Forgot to mention this: that front bumper looks amazing and it really turns the 7 Series into a stunning car.

2010 BMW X1 - Car News

If these barely disguised prototypes look familiar to you, it’s no surprise: This BMW X1 was already shown at last year's Paris auto show under the rather unimaginative but BMW-typical "Concept X1" moniker. Now BMW is testing prototypes on the Spanish island of Mallorca and releasing some details as the car is readied for its official launch later this summer. This will be BMW's fourth size of SUV—sorry, “SAV”—after the X3, X5, and X6.

The elderly X3 is having an increasingly difficult time in a changing marketplace that now includes the Audi Q5 and the Mercedes-Benz GLK. The X5 and X6, on the other hand, have been getting flak for their politically incorrect appetite for fuel—even before BMW, in a somewhat incendiary move, added the over-the-top X5 M and X6 M.

Smaller than X3, but Only Slightly

To send out a good vibe to more socially minded SUV lovers, BMW has chosen to launch a smaller, lighter, more-efficient ute. Based on the company’s small rear-wheel-drive platform, shared with the 1-series and 3-series, the X1 is about 600 pounds lighter than the current X3.

If the next generation 2012 BMW M5 looks like this….

I have no choice but to cut off all the extra spending, entertainment, showgirls, gadgets, you name it, so I can start saving money before the next generation BMW M5 will come out in 2012. No seriously, not even kidding this time…….

I don’t often get super excited about new models, it usually takes a while for a new bimmer to sink in and be accepted by me, but the moment I saw this rendering of the F10 BMW M5, I just fell in love. The design lines are just rights, very masculine and muscular, a wide body, extremely aggressive but yet still appealing even to the most conservative BMW fans - yes, I’m one of them.

2012-bmw-m5 photoshop

But what I love the most about this new rendering is the fact that it does NOT resemble in any way the new 7 Series. I honestly got tired of seeing all those photoshops of the next 5er being based on the bodystyle of the 7 Series. As many people close to BMW have said, the cars are absolutely different and the only slightly similar design element are the headlights.

The details on the next M5 are sketchy and the secret is well guarded behind metal doors in Munich, but what we can tell you at this time is that the BMW M5 will drop the famous naturally aspirated V10 engine in favor of a twin-turbo V8 similar to the one offered in the X5 M/X6 M. If that will be the case, the M5 will have a little bit over 550 horsepower under the hood and will be going after the Audi RS6 and its 572 horsepower.

As far as the release date, historically the M model of the 5 Series, is expected a year later after the launch of the regular 5 Series sedan, so we should expect the new M5 in the first half of 2011.

As usual, as soon as we hear more, you’ll be the first to know.

2010 BMW 5-series Gran Turismo - Official Photos and Info

Usually, we herald the introduction of a brand-new BMW. Even when it challenges our preconceptions about the brand—as did the 1999 X5, the 2002 7-series, and, more recently, the oddly appealing slant-back X6—we try to keep an open mind. But BMW is pushing the limits of our love with its 2010 5-series Gran Turismo, aka 5-series GT, which we first saw in concept form at the Geneva auto show. BMW claims the inaptly named GT's pragmatic sheetmetal will attract Lexus buyers.

As previewed in Geneva, the 5-series GT blends 5-series mechanicals with a none-too-sexy hatchback body and a capacious interior. On the outside, virtually nothing has changed from concept to reality, with the broad, blunt nose leading the way (and containing many pedestrian protection devices within it). While the “Corona rings” in the headlights are now LEDs and frameless windows top the aluminum doors, the most interesting exterior feature is the curious hatchback. It can be opened like a traditional hatchback and also has a separate flap that opens more like a trunk, presumably in order to make the car more palatable to people that have a stigma against hatchback designs. (Since people who stigmatize hatchbacks usually do so because of their looks, not their cargo access, the dual-mode hatch probably won’t help.) Wheel sizes will range from 18 to 20 inches, but even the biggest rollers get dwarfed by the slab sides of the GT. This fortress-on-tiny-wheels design may appeal to Lexus RX shoppers.

2010 BMW 5-Series Gran Turismo Officially Unveiled

Following some image leaks yesterday, BMW has finally dropped the official press release along with high-res photos of the production 2010 BMW 5-Series Gran Turismo, which will make its debut at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show.

Chris Bangle, who is now the former design head at BMW, said that the 5-Series Gran Turismo is known as the “most customer-centered car we’ve ever done.”

“We discovered a group of BMW buyers we were failing to reach out to at a sales level. We wanted to build a car to suit their everyday needs. There were no preconceived ideas. Everything you see is customer driven, Bangle said at the launch of the Concept 5-Series Gran Turismo.

The 2010 BMW 5-Series Gran Turismo will start rolling into showrooms in early 2010 and will be offered with three different powertrain option on three different models including the 535i Gran Turismo, 550i Gran Turismo and the 530 Gran Turismo.

The 2010 BMW 535i Gran Turismo will be powered by a 3.0L straight 6-cylinder twin-turbo making 306-hp with a peak torque of 295 lb-ft. That allows for a 0 to 62 mph run in 6.3 seconds with fuel-economy estimated at 26 mpg. The BMW 550i Gran Turismo is powered by a 4.4L V8 twin-turbo engine making 407-hp and maximum torque of 442 lb-ft. 0 to 62 mph for the 550i Gran Turismo comes in 5.5 seconds while fuel-economy is estimated at 21 mpg. Last but not least, the diesel BMW 530d Gran Turismo is powered by a 3.0L 6-cylinder making 245-hp and 398 lb-ft of torque. 0 to 62 mph for the diesel 5-Series Gran Turismo comes in at 6.9 seconds with an estimated fuel-economy at 36 mpg.

Pricing and regional availability details will be announced closer to launch date.

2010 BMW 5-Series Gran Turismo:

Press Release:

The BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo

• BMW is once again defining a brand-new segment in the automobile market. The BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo combines elegance, space, comfort and variability in truly unique style. As an attractive, future-oriented extension of the BMW 5 Series, the BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo is quite unparalleled worldwide in the upper middle segment, combining the characteristic features of a prestige saloon, a modern, highly versatile Sports Activity Vehicle, and a classic Gran Turismo in brand-new, unprecedented style.

• Through its body design, the BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo combines the proportions so typical of a BMW, an elegantly stretched silhouette and a coupé-like roofline, as well as four doors with frameless windows to create one complete, harmonious unit. The front view of the car animates powerful dynamism through the sheer presence of the upright BMW kidney grille, large air intakes and dual round headlights slanted back at an attractive angle. For the first time the daytime driving light function is provided by corona rings with LED technology. Boasting clear-cut horizontal lines, the rear end comes with that characteristic look of width, power and muscle further enhanced by L-shaped rear light clusters with homogenously illuminated rows of lights in LED technology.

• The luxurious and, for a car with this kind of coupé-like silhouette, surprisingly generous and variable interior gives both the driver and passengers a spontaneous feeling of comfort and well-being. This superior feeling is further enhanced by comfortable entry to the car, the slightly elevated seating position, the large window areas, the optional panorama glass roof, as well as exquisite materials and supreme quality of finish.

• Flexibly adjustable, the interior of the BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo enables the driver and passengers to vary the generous space inside the car as they wish to their individual, personal requirements. In their standard position, the rear seats offer the passengers the same kind of legroom as in the BMW 7 Series combined with the same headroom as in the BMW X5. In this configuration, luggage capacity is already an ample 440 litres or 15.4 cu ft. Thanks to the partition behind the rear seats, the passenger and luggage compartments are separated acoustically and in terms of climate conditions from one another like in a saloon. When required, the rear seats may be moved individually to the front by up to 100 millimetres or almost 4″, with legroom still remaining the same as in the BMW 5 Series Saloon and an increase in luggage capacity to 590 litres or 20.7 cu ft. And after folding down the rear-seat backrests together with the partition, finally, luggage space increases to its maximum capacity of 1,700 litres or 59.5 cu ft.

• Offering unique functionality, the two-piece tailgate on the BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo provides exceptional variability and maximum comfort in loading the luggage compartment. Opening the small, sedan-like luggage compartment lid beneath the rear window, with the tailgate as such remaining closed, the driver and passengers are able to conveniently load the rear compartment without causing any unpleasant noise, draughts or changes in temperature within the passenger compartment. To load large and bulky objects, on the other hand, all they have to do is open the large tailgate for maximum convenience.

• The sheer space and the inspiring, modern design of the interior team up to provide a truly luxurious ambience and the supreme long-distance comfort of a modern Gran Turismo. The sleek surfaces on the front and rear door panels merging smoothly into one another as well as the horizontal arrangement of the instrument panel enhance the impression of supreme generosity. Seat comfort, headroom and elbow freedom are all of the highest standard otherwise to be found only in the luxury performance class. The slightly elevated seating position, the clear, structured arrangement of the controls, BMW’s new iDrive with its Control Display up to 10.2 inches in size, and the cockpit in Black Panel technology all help to give the driver maximum supremacy at all times. The rear seats may be adjusted individually fore-and-aft and also come with individual adjustment of the backrest angle. To meet the greatest demands in terms of individual luxury, finally, two individual comfort seats at the rear are available as an option.

• The BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo is entering the market with a choice of no less than three ultra-modern drive units carrying over BMW -EfficientDynamics into a new segment in the automobile world. The BMW 530d Gran Turismo offers a truly unique, unparalleled balance of driving experience and fuel economy with average fuel consumption in the EU test cycle of just 6.5 litres/100 kilometres, equal to 43.5 mpg imp, and a CO2 rating of 173 g/km. So….what’s interesting about the BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo

In the past 6 months or even more, we have heard many people criticizing the idea behind the BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo and shortly after, the design language chosen for this new invention coming out of the Munich gates. But in our opinion, we need to look past the design and move away, at least for a while, frorm all those heated discussions on whether this car will appeal to anyone or not.

What we need to do next is to focus on what the 5 Series GT brings to the table, there are many new technologies in this new concept and they seem to have been overlooked by many of us, including the media publications. The scope of this article is to show you the “real” 5 Series Gran Turismo and the things that got us excited.

5 Series GT frontview

So, let’s start with the design. The 5 Series Gran Turismo is also the first four-door/sedan BMW to have frameless doors, a feature available at this point only on the Coupe and Convertible models. The famous Hofmeister Kink gets a new form and it appears in “6-window” (3 windows per side) form in the rear quarter windows aft of the rear doors.

BMW 5 Series GT trunklid

As we announced recently, BMW is moving towards building cars with plenty aluminum elements and the four aluminum doors on the 5 Series GT save about 62 lbs compared to a steel frame. Another new design elements is 2-piece bi-modal trunk with independent functionality. The system consists of two pieces: a trunklid-like opening under the rear window and a large liftgate.

BMW 5 Series GT Panoramic

The Panaromic moonroof which debuted in the first generation BMW X3 comes standard on the 550i model and it’s the first of this kind to be featured on a non-X model.

Moving inside, the 5 Series GT supports variable seating accommodations where the 4-seater configuration can turned into a 5-passenger cabin.

The highly awaited Instrument Panel in Black Panel Technology has just made our day. The entire instrument cluster is “in a high-resolution Black Panel display, in which four classic circular instruments are most prominent; other driving-relevant displays and readouts – including Navigation if present, vehicle-monitoring functions, upcoming service requirements and other information.”

Interior design BMW 5 Series GT 001

Add the Head-Up Display to this already amazing technology and we have the dashboard we have never dreamed to have.

Now let’s continued with performance and technical elements. The top model, dubbed 550i, is powered by the twin-turbo V8 engine matted onto an 8-Speed automatic transmission. The new engine delivers 400 hp and does so over a range from 5500 to 6400 rpm. Maximum torque is 450 lb-ft., and available over the extremely broad range of 1800 to 4500 rpm. The high-end 5GT can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 5.4 seconds. Compared to the exemplary 6-speed automatic offered in most current BMW models, the 8-speed’s “taller” cruising gears make a significant contribution to reduced fuel consumption and carbon-dioxide emissions as well as quietness. The wider spread of ratios allows the engine to run at lower speeds, mainly in the “tallest” gear, 8th.

5 Series GT engine

To continue down the same efficiency path, for the first time in an U.S. BMW model, the new 5 Series GT comes equipped with the Brake Energy Regeneration system which reduces fuel consumption. Atypical to the regular alternator system, the system charges the battery only when the vehicle is decelerating or braking.

BMW introduces a new type of front suspension that achieves even better results, particularly in a large, relatively heavy and very powerful vehicle. In place of the strut, this new system has an upper lateral A-arm. The double-pivot lower arms are retained, so that on each side there are three links or arms. While the two lower arms preserve the double-pivot strut system’s advantages, the new upper arm facilitates the system’s handling and riding comfort by relieving the strut of its geometric duties. Some of the immediate advantages of this new multi-link system are large steering caster, more space for larger brakes, reduced friction and small positive steering offset.

As we suspected and mentioned many many times on here, plenty technologies and ideas have been imported from the recently launched 7 Series. The 5 Series Gran Turismo is the first 5er model to have electronically controlled shock absorbers, introduced under the name Dynamic Damping Control, an evolution of the EDC. Combine the DDC with ARS, which stands for Active Roll Stabilization and you have one of the best handling BMWs out there.

Now, let us throw another buzz phrase at you: Integrated Chassis Management and FlexRay. You might be wondering what this is and what it does….don’t worry, you weren’t the only one. BMW’s Integrated Chassis Management is an electronic control scheme which oversees several other components (DSC, DDC, ARS and Integral Active Steering) to ensure maximum stability. This is where FlexRay comes in: “Developed by a consortium of which BMW is a leading member, FlexRay achieves heretofore unheard-of communication speed, some 20 times that previously possible. In the 5 Series Gran Turismo, up to 16 electronic control units can be networked; in no other competitive automobile can longitudinal, lateral and vertical vehicle motions be so precisely monitored and influenced”.

Other 7 Series technologies are included as well, from the optional Night Vision Camera and Camera Package, to the Lane Departure Warning and even Rear Seat Entertainment.

BMW Release Official X5 M Spy Video

BMW have long denied the M version of its X5 SUV, but these denial days are well and truly over. BMW WebTV has just released this video of an X5 M prototype undergoing product testing.

BMW X6 Hybrid caught undisguised

The final production version of the first all-wheel-drive hybrid from BMW, the X6, was spotted in the beautiful Munich. While the concept was officially unveiled at the L.A Auto Show last year in November, the production model has been seen around still carrying some minor camouflage. We already learned that the BMW X6 Hybrid along with 7 Series Hybrid will be launched at the end of this year.

The BMW X6 Hybrid is a two-mode hybrid based on an 8-cylinder gasoline engine which has been custom-made to meet the requirements of an SAV. The newer, greener X6 will utilize the dual-mode ActiveHybrid system, which has discrete modes for high-torque, low speed driving as well as for high-speed cruises.

0-bmw-x6-hybrid-cw-3-desktop-resolution

The system uses a modular hybrid system which can be adapted to many different engine/vehicle combination, as opposed to a design-specific petrol engine/hybrid combination, which sees wider use in the automotive industry.

The two-mode hybrid uses about 20 percent less fuel than than a comparable vehicle with combustion engine. BMW is using a nickel metal hydride battery for the initial applications and unlike the other car manufacturers, the BMW hybrid engine will not be using cylinder deactivation. And second, if our sources are correct, then the BMW X6 Hybrid will feature the Start/Stop technology.

The body style is almost identical to the petrol versions, except the slightly larger M3-style bonnet, a funky feature that has been lightly criticized by some bimmer fans.

Even though no recent announcement has been made but judging from past spy photos, we expect to see  a hybrid version of the BMW X5 as well, most likely next year.

Statement by Dr. Norbert Reithofer at the Annual General Meeting of BMW AG

Dear Shareholders and Shareholders’ Representatives, Dear Employees, Distinguished Guests, Ladies and Gentlemen, I would like to welcome you to the 89th Annual General Meeting of BMW AG on my behalf and that of my colleagues on the Board of Management. I also bid a warm welcome to all investors following this event via the Internet.

The world in which we live is constantly changing, and the BMW Group is also changing as well. This is what I told you last year. And nothing, absolutely nothing, has changed about that.

P90047446

The BMW Group needs to change. And we will do this by building on our history and tradition. Our company has existed over 90 years. Only three percent of all German companies are more than 50 years old.
The critical point for us here and now is that we will continue to follow our successful course in the decades to come.

The BMW Group, your company, has worked hard on establishing important prerequisites. And let me emphasize: We have achieved this through our own wits and as an independent company:
• The BMW Group thinks and acts globally.
• The BMW Group’s financial footing is absolutely sound.
• The BMW Group is the world’s most sustainable car manufacturer. No other company in our industry matches our economic use of resources.
• The BMW Group is the premium car manufacturer whose fleet has by far the lowest CO2 emissions. Actually, who would have thought we had it in us?
• The BMW Group fulfilled its voluntary commitment of the European Automotive Manufacturers Association ACEA and, by 2008, even reduced CO2 emissions by more than 25 percent. We also plan to meet the new emission performance requirements the EU has set for the years 2012 and 2015 on. This means: Excess penalty fees will not be an issue for the BMW Group.
• And last but not least: The BMW Group has set itself clear targets and a vision reaching to the year 2020 with Strategy Number ONE.

All these facts are both an expression and the result of our change process. I would say that we have a lot going for ourselves.
You, dear Shareholders, supported us in this process. I would like to take this opportunity, also on behalf of my colleagues on the Board of Management as well as all employees, to thank you for your trust and commitment – particularly in these difficult times.
Our business is to provide premium individual mobility.
• This is the foundation of our future growth and for future earnings.
• It is the foundation for safeguarding our independence.
• And it is the foundation for securing jobs.

People and society as a whole want to purchase cars. But they want them on different terms.
We understood this early on and acted accordingly.
• Strategy Number ONE is our answer. We started our strategic realignment already in the fall of 2007 – with all the consequences.
• We are charting the right course for the future.
• In 2008 and the first months of 2009, we put into action numerous projects that will pay off in the long term.

Our entire industry is undergoing a fundamental shift. The economic crisis is accelerating this change – insolvencies, partial nationalizations, mergers and acquisitions.
Public awareness of certain values is rising, and these are values that have always been at the core of BMW Group’s entrepreneurial spirit and policy:
To plan for the long term and act responsibly.
• We do not plan or act from one quarter to the next.
• We consider the interest and importance of all groups involved in our company’s success. We have always had stakeholder approach. You as our shareholders benefit from this approach. We are very much part a part of society just like our customers, and thus strive to be a good corporate citizen.
• We assume social responsibility. Our business is premium. And premium for us means responsibility. By acting the way we do, we have a share in keeping people’s trust in the free market economy.

The economic crisis is not the first performance test for the BMW Group:
• We mastered the sale of Rover in 2000.
• We overcame the period of weak sales in 1992/93.
• We defied the oil crisis in 1973. Acting anti-cyclical, we opened our plant in Dingolfing.
• And December 2009 will mark the 50th anniversary of the legendary BMW AGM at which Herbert Quandt and Kurt Golda gave BMW its independence.

Our successes – just like the challenges of the past – have shaped us and made us who we are today.

In the current situation, two things are crucial:
• First: We will navigate our company through these difficult times with determination and foresight. We remain at the wheel and act with due measure.
• Second: We will continue to invest in new products and technologies for the mobility of tomorrow.

I would like to quote German Federal President Horst Köhler who once said: “A crisis – as bad as it may be – will also yield new and great things. … This crisis is about finding new solutions for a new era.”
We believe in ourselves and in the future of the BMW Group. And I am convinced that you do as well.
Today, I would like to touch on the following points:
• First: How did we tackle the business year 2008?
• Second: How are we dealing with the current situation?
• Third: How are we going to position the BMW Group in the future?

Straight to the first point:
The business year 2008 was characterized by two developments:
• In the first half of the year, we increased our retail volume. For January to June, we recorded earnings before taxes of approx. € 1.24 billion, down 35 percent from the first-half of 2007. Our business development was burdened by external factors, namely additional risk provisions and extraordinary HR expenditure. We managed to compensate for these effects. Without the additional expenditure, our result would have exceeded that of the first-half of 2007 by about € 190 million. And Group return on sales would have been at 7 percent.
• In the second half of the year, the negative effects of the financial and economic crises on retail volume, prices and the leasing business increased. The situation deteriorated from month to month. In the fourth quarter in particular, we felt the full weight of the crisis.

These are our operating figures in detail:
• Automobile retail: We delivered more than 1.43 million vehicles to customers. This is the second best result in our company’s history. No other premium manufacturer sold more vehicles in 2008 than we did. MINI and Rolls-Royce achieved new record sales. And we managed to raise our share in the global premium segment to over 25 percent.
• Motorcycle retail: The business unit Motorcycles contributed to the BMW Group’s success in 2008. More than 101,600 BMW motorcycles were delivered, almost as many as in 2007 – in a declining overall market. Today BMW Motorrad is the most important European manufacturer of large motorcycles. Our brand Husqvarna Motorcycles also developed well. In the first year since the acquisition of this brand by BMW, retail stood at more than 13,500 units, up 31 percent from the previous year. In 2008, Husqvarna was the world’s fastest growing motorcycle brand. It was the right decision to acquire Husqvarna to extend our portfolio.
• Group revenues: BMW Group revenues declined by 5 percent last year – to € 53.2 billion.
• Earnings: The 2008 EBIT, earnings before interest and taxes, was clearly positive at € 921 million. Pre-tax profit stood at € 351 million, which is more than 90 percent below the figure in 2007. The reasons for this development are:
o First, the decline in retail.
o Second, the extraordinary expense of over € 2.4 billion arising, above all, from risk provisions for residual values in the leasing business and credit losses as well as the HR compensation program.

• Net profit: We actually achieved a profit in an increasingly difficult economic environment. Our net profit was € 330 million, about 90 percent less than the year before.

You know that we had much more ambitious targets. That’s a fact: We certainly put up a good fight, day after day! We continually challenged ourselves and our employees as well.
Despite the challenging conditions, we recorded a profit at the end of the business year 2008. Our employees worked much harder than the key figures demonstrated. This is one of the reasons why we are in a much better position today than many of our competitors.
I hope I am speaking for you as well, Ladies and Gentlemen, when I extend our sincere thanks to all our employees worldwide for their outstanding dedication.
Dear Shareholders,
We are hearing from politicians that this might be the right time to waive dividend payments.
• This is definitely not our approach and not our understanding of shareholder value.
• And it is not our understanding of fair participation of our shareholders in the company’s success.

We achieved a positive result in 2008. And we are convinced of our operational strength. You as the owners of this company have a right to benefit from our performance in the business year 2008.
But I am sure you agree that the dividend for 2008 should be more modest than in the previous year.
The Board of Management and the Supervisory Board propose to issue as a dividend the net profit for the year 2008 in the amount of € 197 million. This would result in a dividend of 30 cents per ordinary share and 32 cents per preferred share.
I realize this is less than in the past. However, we think that this step is necessary and justifiable. In the long term we want you as our shareholders to participate in the company’s success.

Since you, our shareholders, will be receiving a smaller dividend, both BMW Group executives and employees will also earn less money for the business year 2008 as well although they worked very hard:
• Executives will not receive this year a corporate bonus.
• Employees will not receive this year a profit sharing bonus.

We always paid out one of the highest profit sharing bonuses in the German industry. You as our shareholders supported this.
But success-based payments, Ladies and Gentlemen, require exactly that: success.
The strong decline in our Group’s business performance affects all the Group’s employees—the higher the position the stronger the bonus compensation component. This is right and this is what we want.
Everybody at the BMW Group is aware of the financial effects and knows that they are the result of these challenging economic times. Despite this, our employees were highly motivated and were determined to deliver top performance. And that is exactly what I expect from them.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
For you as shareholders, the dividend is important – as is the BMW share price. Last year I promised you that we would work hard on this matter.
In 2008, the stock market knew mainly one direction: down.
Given this development, BMW shares held up quite well:
• Let’s have a closer look at the year 2008: On the last trading day of the year, BMW ordinary shares were traded at 49 percent below their price at the end of 2007. Compared to other European car manufacturers, BMW’s preferred shares were among the most successful.
• When we look at the twelve months since the last AGM, BMW stock outperformed both the DAX index and the industry index Prime Automobile.
• Between the beginning of 2009 and yesterday’s share price at market closing: BMW ordinary shares rose by 10.2 percent compared to the end of 2008, while company preferred shares increased by 15.1 percent over the same period. The German DAX declined by 1.7 percent in the same period. The automotive industry prime index also decreased by 2.9 percent. Upon announcement of the company’s first-quarter figures on May 6th of this year, the BMW ordinary shares rose by 30 percent compared to the last trading day in 2008. The latest stock price development reflects our strong focus on liquidity, free cash flow and operating performance. For the BMW Group, this trend is a promise for the future and proof that we are on the right track.

I would now like to move on to my second point:
The current economic situation requires first of all financial stability. Just look at our competitive environment if you have any doubts about the importance of liquidity.
Our Group’s financial footing is absolutely sound:
• At the end of 2008 our liquidity was at € 8.1 billion.
• And we managed to improve liquidity even further in the first quarter of 2009 – to approximately € 10 billion. This is on par with the liquidity of the Volkswagen Group with its much larger business volume. At € 220 million, free cash flow was also clearly positive in the first quarter.

This gives us financial security – as well as the leeway we need to shape our future.
The high liquidity attests to the fact that we initiated countermeasures to offset the effects of the economic crisis much earlier than other car manufacturers. We acted with foresight and determination. This approach is now paying off.
There are further examples to underscore this statement:
• First: Our financial services unit adjusted quickly to the changing situation. Already in the first and second quarter of 2008, we established provisions against decreasing residual values and credit losses. In addition, we shifted the focus of our activities in this field from leasing towards loan financing. However, to do without leasing is not an option. Customers expect this kind of offer, particularly in markets such as the US. And leasing customers are very loyal customers.

• Second: We reduced costs, investments and capital expenditure per vehicle. These steps do not affect our vehicle’s’ high quality. On the contrary: According to the 2008 ADAC crash statistics, our models are among the best cars. For the second time in succession, the BMW X3 ranked first in the category Quality.
Let me now return to costs: I instructed all divisions and areas to tap into further efficiency potential. As a result, our fixed costs in 2008 were actually lower than in 2007. The measures based on our Strategy Number ONE are taking effect. And our costs have declined further in the first quarter of 2009. We are literally killing two birds with one stone:
o We are optimizing the current cost structure.
o At the same time, we are building a sound foundation for our profitability in the years to come.

Costs of material declined significantly as well. This target was achieved not against, but with our suppliers. It is already clear that we will considerably exceed our goal for 2012 to reduce material costs by € 4 billion. You know the developments in the supplier market. Reliable, healthy suppliers are vital to our business success. We have therefore established an internal supplier risk management system. If necessary, we will be able to initiate preventive measures in cooperation with our suppliers and other partners.

• Third: We reduced inventories substantially. We act according to our principle: Production needs to correspond with demand. Already in late 2008, we throttled production at the German plants and reduced inventories while our competitors continued to build up new stock. In the first three months of 2009, we produced fewer vehicles than we delivered. So by the end of March, we had reduced inventories even more.
We introduced temporary short-time work in the beginning of 2009. The Board of Management and the Works Council reached a mutual agreement on this point very quickly. Particularly in these difficult times the BMW way turns out to be the most efficient: Management and employees cooperate in a constructive and solution-oriented manner. As our company focuses on the long term, we want to cooperate and safeguard the jobs of our permanent staff. Last Monday we were able to terminate the period of short-time work at Plant Regensburg ahead of schedule. And I am delighted to tell you that from the beginning of June on, Plant Leipzig will return to two-shift operation. There is strong demand for the BMW 1 Series produced there. In Germany, we are benefitting slightly from the government’s scrappage incentive. Plant Leipzig is scheduled to start production of the new BMW X1 in September.
In retrospect, it has become clear that we mastered the situation well because we started to eliminate temporary positions and offer voluntary redundancy to permanent staff as early as 2008.

• Fourth: As regards job reductions, we exceeded our target.
That was a tough step and it was a difficult decision to make. But unfortunately, it was absolutely necessary. And it was just at the right time. As of the end of 2008, our headcount had decreased by 7,498 year-on-year. All areas were streamlined. So in the future, our personnel costs will be reduced by € 500 million a year.
On the other hand, we will continue to hire new staff, primarily engineers. In 2008, we created 226 new positions. We are also planning to recruit a few hundred new employees in particular fields in 2009.
And we continue to train young people even in these times.
As of 31 December 2008, we employed 4,102 apprentices, most of them in Germany. Apprentices make up more than five percent of our workforce. In 2009, we are once again hiring 1,100 young people to train with us. This is social responsibility à la BMW Group. And I am sure you approve of this approach, dear Shareholders.
We have implemented all these activities and many more with determination. This is now to our advantage.
Once again, the first quarter of 2009 required us to stand our ground in a very difficult environment – and we succeeded.
• Our retail plunged by 21 percent in the first three months of the year. Nevertheless, we outperformed the premium segment as a whole.
• Group EBIT is only slightly negative at minus € 55 million. As we all know, at the beginning of 2008 the global economy was in much better shape than it is today.

The media’s response was thus positive throughout:
• Spiegel headlined: “BMW’s loss lower than expected.”
• Handelsblatt read: “BMW’s efforts are taking hold.”
• And ARD-Online complimented: “BMW demonstrates its crisis management skills.”

But these figures also show that it is much too early to see the end of the tunnel. The economic forecasts continue to be critical.
And this is why we will continue to act in” the here and now“.
We will have a clear focus on the markets:
• We plan to sustain and strengthen our market share in the individual countries.
• We are securing a strong starting position in the race for strategically important markets.

Let’s take the US as an example:
Our activities on the US market are bearing fruit. For the very first time, our BMW brand outsold Lexus on the American market in the first quarter of 2009. BMW is now the best-selling premium brand in the US.
There is still enormous potential on the US market.
• We are spending US$ 750 million on the expansion of our plant in Spartanburg.
• We are going to produce the successor of the BMW X3 there.
• Our American BMW dealerships plan to invest a total of US$ 300 million this year.

An important growth market is China.
China replaced the US as the world’s largest automotive market in the first quarter of 2009. And in China, the share of the premium segment in the overall market is only one to two percent right now. We are accepting this challenge and capitalizing on our strengths to create further market growth.

You see, Ladies and Gentlemen, we are making the best use of this period to prepare your company for the business upturn. This crisis will truly demonstrate who has done their homework and who has not.

Our strategic approach is focused on the long term.
Which brings me to my third and last point for today: How do we plan to position the BMW Group in the future?
As shareholders you would surely like to know what is in store for the automotive industry? Let me emphasize that we are on the upward trend.
The global car markets and the demand for premium vehicles will rebound. This is in all the forecasts. And this is what we expect.
However, the general understanding of premium will change. And we have to be prepared for that as well.
With its three brands BMW, MINI and Rolls-Royce, the BMW Group is the only car manufacturer whose portfolio focuses exclusively on the premium segment – from the small car segment to the ultra-luxury class.
We are taking the term premium to the next level.
We will continue to define premium for the future.
• Premium is sustainable.
• Premium is efficient.
• Premium is innovative.
• Premium is design.
• Premium is future.

The BMW Group is on the cutting-edge in all these areas.
1.) Premium is sustainable.
The BMW Group is the world’s most sustainable automotive manufacturer today.
Future mobility requires a new balance between individual and ecological requirements. This applies to both drive systems and production processes.
2008 marked the fourth consecutive year that the Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes ranked the BMW Group as the automotive industry’s global sustainability leader.
You as our shareholders stand to benefit from our commitment as the capital markets increasingly recognize and appreciate sustainability as a value driver.
We have anchored sustainability in our production with our approach “Clean Production”. And we will continue to set ourselves ambitious targets:
We plan to reduce the consumption of energy, water, sewage, solvent emissions as well as waste in our international production network by another 30 percent between 2006 and 2012.
This is responsibility that pays off – for us, for you and for the world in which we live.

2.) Premium is efficient.
The BMW Group has reduced fleet emissions further than any other car manufacturer.
The Federal Motor Transport Authority in Germany has confirmed our lead in the field of emission reduction:
• The average fuel consumption of our BMW and MINI cars in Germany is 5.9 liters per 100 kilometers. This equates to carbon emissions of approx. 158 g/km. On average, newly registered cars in Germany emit 165 g CO2/km.
• MINI’s average CO2 emissions are 138.6 grams/km.
• BMW’s fleet emissions are lower than those of Germany’s number one mass manufacturer and on par with car manufacturers whose portfolios primarily consist of small cars.

I consider this a convincing achievement. Let our competitors match that if they can. This is Efficient Dynamics at work.

49 BMW and MINI models comply with the strict EU5 emission requirements. The BMW 330d with the optional BMW BluePerformance technology even meets the EU6 standard taking effect in 2014.
Sheer driving pleasure starts at 4.4 liters per 100 km and 118 grams of CO2/km. This is the performance data of BMW’s new entry-level model – the BMW 116d.
With a BMW or MINI, you can travel much farther than with comparable models by our competitors. For 100 Euros
• a MINI ONE will get you from Munich to Gothenburg
• a BMW 123d from Munich to Madrid
• a BMW 320d from Munich to Athens and
• a BMW 740i from Munich to Rotterdam.

These are based on test drives. All thanks to Efficient Dynamics.

3.) Premium is innovative.
Our innovative models set new standards.
Three examples:
• Number one: The new BMW 7 Series. It is the absolute best car on the market right now. Our flagship model and its innovations are popular with both customers and the press. When “auto, motor und sport” recently chose their best cars of the year 2009, the new 7 Series dominated the luxury class – not least of all due to its efficiency. The 730d only consumes 7.2 liters of diesel per 100 kilometers. In Europe, the new BMW 7 Series is already the segment leader although it was launched only a few months ago. In Germany alone, sales for the new 7 Series were up more than 80 percent in the first four months of 2009 compared to last year’s figures. At the same time, competitors saw their sales deteriorating. In Austria, the federal and state governments are now driving BMW, namely the 730d and the 520d, the most environmentally friendly cars in their respective segments. Thanks to the new cars, the Austrian government will reduce carbon emissions by 43 tons a year. A strong argument for our innovative spirit and capabilities.

• Number two: The new BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo.
This is the contemporary interpretation of the sedan concept. The 5 Series Gran Turismo is going to define an entirely new segment. Its unique variability will attract new customer groups when it goes on sale in fall. As I see it, the 5 Series Gran Turismo is premium at its most innovative.

• And number three: In November, our X model series will be complemented by the BMW X1. This highly innovative vehicle will help the BMW brand address new customers as well.

4.) Premium is design.
In this area, we are, without a doubt, the trendsetter.
Just look at the new BMW Z4 that arrived at the dealerships last Saturday. It clearly demonstrates our trendsetting design philosophy and design language. For its contemporary interpretation of the classic roadster form, the new Z4 received the American Eyes On Design Award at the beginning of the year.

In June, both the new BMW Z4 and the new BMW 7 Series are going to receive the renowned red dot award. Please allow me to quote from the jury’s statement about the new 7 Series: it convinced jurors “with its harmonious combination of elegance, sporting flair and strong presence.” I couldn’t have said it better.
At the MINI brand, design is also a major stimulus for buying decisions. Fifty years ago, the first MINI rolled off the assembly line. But it was the BMW Group who catapulted the iconic design of MINI, successfully into the 21st century following the brand’s integration into the Group.
The same is true for Rolls-Royce. For Rolls-Royce we adapted the form of this classic car and the special tradition of this ultra-luxury brand to our times. The Phantom Coupe and the Phantom Drophead Coupe attest to that.
All our three brands – each of its own accord – are unique thanks to their extraordinary design.

5.) Premium also means future.
We are also in the forefront when it comes to new technologies and new mobility concepts. This includes hybrid technology, electric drives and mobility solutions for the world’s megacities:
• BMW’s first two hybrid models are scheduled to go into series production this year: the new BMW 7 Series as a mild hybrid and the BMW X6 as a full hybrid.
• The zero-emission electric-drive MINI E is the first result of project i. And it gives us a clear competitive advantage:
o In technological respects – as the MINI E already has a maximum reach of 250 kilometers and 204 hp.
o And in trial – as the MINI E will undergoing a major road test by customers in Germany, the US and the UK.

There are high expectations regarding electric mobility. California is a pioneer in this field. Governor Schwarzenegger was impressed when I presented the MINI E to him in Los Angeles. But we need to remain realistic and reasonable, since it will take many years before electric cars will be a common sight on our roads:
o First of all, electric cars do not meet all the various mobility demands.
o And secondly, there are many unresolved issues – regarding affordable technology, battery lifecycles, infrastructure, etc. Currently carmakers, energy providers, politicians and our society are going through a learning process.

• Our long-term goal is sustainable mobility. The MINI E will provide us with relevant findings for the next step of project i – the Megacity Vehicle. Many of you may be curious as what that is supposed to be. Just trust our creativity. There will be surprising solutions. But fact is: Customers will be able to decide what kind of drive system they prefer: a fully electric drive or a high-efficiency combustion engine. This vehicle will be the first of many near-zero emission vehicles. Imagine both single and double lane vehicles. I know all that sounds like a dream of a faraway future. But it isn’t. We are planning to start series production of the first vehicles of this kind and bring them to the market in the first half of the next decade.

You see, Ladies and Gentlemen, we offer our customers by far the most efficient premium vehicles. Those who drive a BMW, MINI or Rolls-Royce – or maybe soon one of our Megacity Vehicles – can continue to drive guilt-free.
Sheer driving pleasure is a highly emotional experience. And obviously, pleasure is one of the best feelings people can have. So we want to enhance the emotional effect our customers have when driving our vehicles. For this very reason, we are going to launch a new advertising campaign for the BMW brand in the early summer. We are going to start in Germany and some other European countries.
We also want to be in the lead with regard to new technologies. This is why we will continue to invest considerable amounts in developing new realms of mobility. We are in a position to do this:
• because we have the financial headroom,
• the necessary expertise, and
• highly motivated employees with outstanding ideas.

Just think about the current situation in our industry. Mergers and even “a marriage made in heaven” as Fiat boss Marchionne calls it are the order of the day.
The BMW Group, on the other hand, has existed for over 90 years, and this is because we have always charted our own course.
Size is no guarantee for success. In many cases, it is best to use one’s wits and intelligence. This is what the US business magazine “Fortune” recently wrote about the BMW Group.
We are confident and determined: We will continue to chart our own course in the future – on our own and independently!
Co-operations will remain an integral part of our strategy, but not at the expense of our independence. A co-operation always needs to result in a win-win situation for both parties.
• We successfully cooperate with PSA in the field of engine production for our MINI cars.
• We will extend our co-operation with Daimler on the purchase of parts and components.
• And for the MINI E we will work closely with various energy providers.

We are also going to continue the implementation of our Strategy Number ONE.
We are already harvesting the first fruits of our efforts today. But it will be mostly in the medium term that the activities initiated in the past few months will have a positive impact on our business operations.
I am not giving away a secret when I tell you that our three best-selling model series are going to be revised within the next few years. In the years 2010 to 2012, this will consist of more than half of our entire product portfolio. This will give us additional momentum.
Profitability will improve as the new model series help us tap into new potentials. Our costs are going to decrease considerably – thanks to standardizations and the application of modules. Development and planning costs are already going down.
Our long-term profitability targets as laid out in Strategy Number ONE remain unchanged. In 2012 we plan to achieve:
• a return on capital employed of 26 percent in the automobile segment and
• an EBIT-based return on sales of 8 to 10 percent in the automobile segment.

2009 will be a challenging year for us. But we are fighting – for every vehicle, for every cent and for every employee!
Dear Shareholders, given the current developments you might ask yourselves: How many manufacturers will survive the crisis? I don’t have that answer.
But there is one thing I know for sure: The BMW Group will be one of them. Take me at my word when I say: The BMW Group with its three strong premium brands will continue to have a major role in the future of global automotive industry.
The BMW Group, Ladies and Gentlemen,
• delivers top performance
• possesses a strong fighting spirit
• will create new mobility solutions for a new era!

Behind the Wheel - 2009 BMW 335d and X5 xDrive 35d

During one of the worst economic crises of our times, BMW North America has released two highly awaited diesel vehicles: BMW 335d and X5 xDrive 35d. Over the course of the last few years, many BMW loyal fans have requested some popular European diesel models to be brought to the U.S. and everyone became excited when the first rumors of a late 2009 launch appeared.

Unfortunately, the timing issue might not have been in BMW’s advantage, especially when the gasoline prices dropped significantly at the end of last year, while the diesel gallon price was still high. Of course, these product launches follow a timeline and things are set in motion months ahead of the launch date, even years for certain vehicles, so we have to admit that it is difficult for any auto manufacturer to predict these situations.

BMW X5d and 335d test drive

While no one has really argued the pros of a diesel engine, efficiency and clean technology, there were many consumers worried about the performance and higher upfront costs. In our BMW 335d test drive at the L.A car show, we stated that if you are in the premium market, and you’re looking for something fun, sporty, luxurious, and in the same don’t like hybrid Toyotas and Lexus’s, the 335d is worth a shot. BUT…we also said that if you already own a 335i and love driving manual transmissions, then take a rain check this time.

As far as the X5d goes, we haven’t had much experience behind its wheel, but this will change shortly when we will take it across the coast in a unique review, so stay tuned for more details in the upcoming weeks.

Now let’s see if New York Times agrees with us and hear their opinion on the BMW 335d and X5d.

BMW’s dual entries — the 335d sedan and the tongue-twisting X5 xDrive 35d sport utility — struck me as perhaps the most desirable specimens yet.

I want their performance, which stacks up against BMW’s enthusiast-endorsed gasoline versions. I need their fuel economy, especially the stellar 37 miles a gallon on the highway that I received in the 335d. But on the rare occasions when I stopped to refuel, my ballad-worthy love for the Bimmers was soured somewhat by the volatile price of diesel. At the pump, these BMWs — like their counterparts from Audi, Mercedes and Volkswagen — turn into nutty spouses on a credit-card binge.

Nutty has been the word for diesel prices. When I reviewed the VW Jetta TDI diesel on these pages last November, diesel fuel sold for $2.95 a gallon nationwide, compared with $2.05 for regular gas. That huge premium wiped out the Jetta diesel’s considerable mileage advantage. And since the diesel model costs $700 more than the gasoline version (accounting for its $1,300 alternative fuel tax credit), its money-saving argument seemed less compelling.

The BMW X6 from HARTGE - the new crossover dimension

Two ton diesel sprinter with a top speed of 256 km/h
Herbert Hartge and his team have pushed the skilful stylistic blend of a four-wheel drive vehicle from the SAV segment (below the waistline) and a coupé (above it) into a new dimension. His X6 xDrive35d is more than an extraordinary symbiosis of a high-street thoroughbred and a crossover workhorse. Although the diesel engine with Twin turbocharger is already the most powerful in its class, the specialists from Germany's Saarland region have breathed on the power plant so it now generates no less than 241 kW (328 hp) at 4400 rpm and a mighty 675 Nm of torque low down at 2000 rpm. At the same time, the emissions remain well within limits for such a powerful vehicle at 220 g/km. Indeed, the X6 xDrive35d from HARTGE uses half a litre less diesel per 100 kilometres than its series counterpart under comparable conditions. Equally impressive are the performance figures. Despite a weight of 2,185 kg, the X6 takes only six seconds to reach 100 km/h and is thus significantly quicker off the mark than the standard xDrive35d (6.9 sec.). The maximum speed - there is no electronic limiter on the HARTGE model - has been measured at 256 km/h.

2009 Hartge BMW X6

Visually underscoring the concentrated power hidden beneath the bonnet is the HARTGE aerodynamic kit in high quality PUR-RIM material. Wheel-arch extensions linked by side sills provide sufficient room for the HARTGE suspension, which includes a set of sports springs with or without level-control system for the rear axle and lowering by 30 mm, and the company's "CLASSIC 2" wheels (10.5 x 22" offset 33 at the front and 12 x 22" offset 23 at the back).
These attractive aluminium wheels are fitted with ultra-wide tyres (295 / 30 ZR 22 at the front and 335 / 25 ZR 22 at the rear). Rounding off the kit are a front spoiler and a rear skirt with an integrated diffuser while carbon casings for the exterior mirrors, stainless-steel tail pieces with quadrilateral tail pipes (large version) left and right for the exhaust system, HARTGE emblems and insignia emphasize the individual outfit of this X6.
The interior is dominated by a sporting atmosphere a la HARTGE. Via the HARTGE 3-spoke leather steering wheel with carbon inserts - alternatively, carbon steering-wheel covers are available - the driver's glance falls on a 300 km/h speedometer and rev counter with dials in silver metallic and red needles. Plenty of room for personal touches to the "interior architecture" of the X6 is given by a variety of accessories including decor and interior trim, carbon parts for the dashboard and consoles, aluminium foot rest and pedal set, as well as black velour foot and load-area mats.
A full HARTGE conversion for the X6 xDrive35d - including fitment and painting work - costs EUR 29,353.94 including 19% VAT. Naturally, all parts can also be retrofitted individually.

BMW launches AK-47 thwarting X5 Security Plus

If Jason Statham's character, Frank, decides to switch back to a BMW in The Transporter 4, we think we have his new ride picked out. Or maybe Clive Owen just needs to film another episode of The Driver. BMW has just released info on its first Class Six bullet resistant vehicle, the BMW X5 Security Plus, which happens to be the first vehicle ever available to the public with that classification from a high-volume manufacturer. That means that its skin can handle anything up to a AK-47 assault rifle, the weapon-of-choice for terrorists, pirates and kidnappers around the globe. Besides thicker bulletproof glass, BMW has added heavier armored body panels all around, as well as sealing up all of the joints to bolster protection in normally vulnerable body panel gaps.

BMW X5 Security Plus

The Security Plus models are partially built alongside the regular models in Spartanburg, SC, and then sent to Toluca, Mexico for final assembly. Some of the special features that are fitted include a beefed-up suspension with special run-flat tires, an intercom system to communicate with people outside the vehicle, a hold-up alarm that automatically locks windows and doors, plus sirens and flashing lights too. There's also a list of options that includes a rear view camera and a front-bumper-mounted side view camera. It's powered by BMW's 355 horsepower, 4.80-liter V8, and even with the extra equipment, this crossover can scoot from 0 to 62 miles-per-hour in 8.2 seconds on its way to a top speed electronically limited to 112 mph.
There's a full press release after the jump and a huge high-res gallery too. You'll see there is very little to tip evil-doers that the person inside is worthy of attention, until the need to escape arises and the lights go on. BMW handles sales of these vehicles in a very discreet manner and even offers special driver training so anyone can become The Driver.

BMW Diesels are Pricey

Both of BMW's upcoming diesel autos will showcase the brand's 265-hp, twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six producing 425 pounds-feet of torque. A six-speed transmission will be the lone transmission option.

The 335d will be priced at $43,900, a $1,900 price increase over a comparable gas-powered model. Performance remains stout with a 6.2 second sprint to sixty while still offering up fuel economy figures rivaling four cylinder gas powered cars at 23/33mpg city/highway.
The other diesel model will be the X5 xDrive35d. Priced at $51,200, the car boasts a more significant $4,100 price increase over its conventionally powered brethren. The X5 being able to attain 19/25mpg city/highway.
Both cars will be 50 state legal and will use a particulate filter coupled to a urea injection system similar to that used in the Mercedes BlueTec system. Both cars are also eligible for tax credits from the government which effectively halve the price increases over the standard motored cars.
Our take? Expensive, especially considering the price of diesel over regular gas.
