BMW Group 101,589 vehicles in April - 3,000 orders for the new Z4

In April the BMW Group’s sales performance was again impacted by weak automotive markets resulting from the global economic and financial crisis. In addition, many countries also had two fewer workdays this month than last April. Over the past month deliveries of the BMW, MINI and Rolls-Royce brands decreased by 23.8% to 101,589 (prev.yr. 133,287) vehicles. Sales of the BMW brand were 24.6% lower at 84,218 (prev.yr. 111,737) units. MINI sold 17,320 vehicles (prev.yr. 21,462 / -19.3%) in April. Rolls-Royce reported a decline of 42.0% to 51 automobiles (prev.yr. 88) for the month.

The BMW Group sold 378,859 (prev.yr. 485,232 / -21.9%) vehicles worldwide between January and April. BMW delivered 317,722 (prev.yr. 405,282) units: 21.6% less than in the same period last year. The MINI brand reported a 23.6% (60,912 units / prev.yr. 79,679) decline in sales volumes for the year to the end of April, while the Rolls-Royce brand experienced a decrease of 17.0% (225 units /prev.yr. 271).

Ian Robertson, member of the Board of Management of BMW AG, responsible for Sales and Marketing: “The situation on the global automotive markets remains very challenging – even though we did manage to gain market share in the premium segment over the first four months of 2009.” Robertson added: “BMW is still the world’s number one premium automotive brand in terms of sales. And in the United States no other European automobile brand sold more vehicles in April than BMW.
I remain confident we will be able to expand our market position in the premium segment further by the end of the year.”

With 15,705 (prev.yr. 26,735 / -41.3%) deliveries in the U.S. in April, BMW posted a substantial decrease in sales. However, last month BMW was not only able to defend its position as the best-selling premium automotive brand, but was also the top European automobile brand in the U.S. MINI also performed much better than the overall market (-34%) and its segment (-26 %) despite a decline of 22.4%. For the year to the end of April both brands increased their share of the world’s largest automotive market.

The new BMW Z4 has been extremely well received by customers and the media alike. The sporty roadster, which is manufactured at BMW’s Regensburg plant, will be in showrooms starting May 9th. More than 3,000 orders for the new model have already been placed. The BMW X6 is also in the fast lane – deliveries have more than tripled from last year’s level to reach 3,600 units (prev.yr. 885 / +306.8%). The brand’s flagship also made further gains: The new BMW 7 Series, which just unveiled its top-of-the-range 760 Li version at the Shanghai Auto Show, was delivered to 3,004 customers in April. With 19,712 units sold, sales of the BMW 1 Series matched the previous year’s level (prev.yr. 19,719 / +/-0%). Sales of the popular 5-door version climbed 9.9% to a total of 11,193 units (prev.yr. 10,189).

The Motorcycle Segment also felt the effects of the difficult market conditions in April. In the month under review the BMW Group sold 10,166 (prev.yr. 12,489) motorcycles – a decrease of 18.6%. For the year to the end of April 27,400 motorcycles were delivered to customers (prev.yr. 33,533 / -18.3%). The newly expanded BMW motorcycle range is expected to boost sales. The three K Series models presented last year (K1300 S/R/GT) have been available for delivery to customers since early February. The new F 800 R will also be launched later this month, as well as BMW’s first super sport motorcycle, the S 1000 RR, towards the end of the year.

1971 BMW 2002 Racer for $15,500 — Or Maybe Free!

Nice Price or Crack Pipe brings you a deal too good to be true — a 2002 racer that'll fulfill your track fantasies, but with infomercial pricing that may leave your wallet empty.

SCCA, NASA, VARA, SCTA and ECTA- amateur racing can keep your blood pressure high, and your bank account low. There's nothing better than dicing it up through the turns, going tire to tire, as you watch your money scrub off into the weeds. It's an unforgiving hobby; if an inattentive driver runs into you on the highway, you call your insurance agent, but if a particularly aggressive driver knocks you into the tires on Oak Tree at NLRC, you call your lender, and ask how much is left in the HELOC. It's not a sport for the timid, nor those with shared bank accounts.

Today we have a 1971 2002 that has been set up for either SCCA or vintage events. There's not much detail to the car, but the seller claims to need to be rid of it due to arthritis- hopefully not the car's. He also manages to offer up some creative math in justifying his claim that the car is, for all intents and purposes free. He says that for your $15,500 you'll not just get the car, but also the trailer- worth $3,000- as well as $10,000 in spare parts. Well, that actually makes the car $2,500, but why split hairs?

That's still outside of LeMons pricing, but not so many Deutsches that you couldn't leave your mark on some SCCA action. And a 2002 makes for an excellent racer- it's competent enough to be competitive, and yet big enough to be a rolling chicane, if you aren't.

Now here's your chance to see if you do have what it takes out on the track, to determine if you've got the mastery of the inside pass, and the possession of some deep pockets. If, on the parade lap, what you're thinking about is the waste of $5.00 a gallon 100 octane, then maybe you're more of a spectator, rather than a participant. But if you look at this ad and don't even bat an eye, then slip on your balaclava!

There's no better place to test the mettle of both man and machine than in the heat of wheel to wheel racing action. Do you think that, for $15,500, this wheeling dealer is sitting on the pole, or is he DNF'd in the pits?

Behind the Wheel - 2009 BMW 335d and X5 xDrive 35d

During one of the worst economic crises of our times, BMW North America has released two highly awaited diesel vehicles: BMW 335d and X5 xDrive 35d. Over the course of the last few years, many BMW loyal fans have requested some popular European diesel models to be brought to the U.S. and everyone became excited when the first rumors of a late 2009 launch appeared.

Unfortunately, the timing issue might not have been in BMW’s advantage, especially when the gasoline prices dropped significantly at the end of last year, while the diesel gallon price was still high. Of course, these product launches follow a timeline and things are set in motion months ahead of the launch date, even years for certain vehicles, so we have to admit that it is difficult for any auto manufacturer to predict these situations.

BMW X5d and 335d test drive

While no one has really argued the pros of a diesel engine, efficiency and clean technology, there were many consumers worried about the performance and higher upfront costs. In our BMW 335d test drive at the L.A car show, we stated that if you are in the premium market, and you’re looking for something fun, sporty, luxurious, and in the same don’t like hybrid Toyotas and Lexus’s, the 335d is worth a shot. BUT…we also said that if you already own a 335i and love driving manual transmissions, then take a rain check this time.

As far as the X5d goes, we haven’t had much experience behind its wheel, but this will change shortly when we will take it across the coast in a unique review, so stay tuned for more details in the upcoming weeks.

Now let’s see if New York Times agrees with us and hear their opinion on the BMW 335d and X5d.

BMW’s dual entries — the 335d sedan and the tongue-twisting X5 xDrive 35d sport utility — struck me as perhaps the most desirable specimens yet.

I want their performance, which stacks up against BMW’s enthusiast-endorsed gasoline versions. I need their fuel economy, especially the stellar 37 miles a gallon on the highway that I received in the 335d. But on the rare occasions when I stopped to refuel, my ballad-worthy love for the Bimmers was soured somewhat by the volatile price of diesel. At the pump, these BMWs — like their counterparts from Audi, Mercedes and Volkswagen — turn into nutty spouses on a credit-card binge.

Nutty has been the word for diesel prices. When I reviewed the VW Jetta TDI diesel on these pages last November, diesel fuel sold for $2.95 a gallon nationwide, compared with $2.05 for regular gas. That huge premium wiped out the Jetta diesel’s considerable mileage advantage. And since the diesel model costs $700 more than the gasoline version (accounting for its $1,300 alternative fuel tax credit), its money-saving argument seemed less compelling.

Hamann gives the BMW Z4 new wheels

ssts_51897

Shortly after AC Schnitzer revealed some of their future upgrades on the 2009 BMW Z4, the other famous German tuner Hamann follows with their own version of Z4 wheels. While we expect to see a full package for the new Z4 in the near future, for now, Hamann released a set of wheels in two different colors and styles.

Hamann wheels have always been controversial and BMW fans can never fully agree on them, but in our opinion, it all comes down to personal preference and how much you like to “pimp out” your car.

BMW reveals all the details on S 1000 RR superbike

We haven’t covered many BMW Motorrad news on here, but we’re looking to change this and what’s the best way to reconnect with the BMW bikes fans other than posting the official unveiling of the S 1000 RR. Last week, BMW has finally revealed their latest superbike and it is quite impressive.

So, what got us so excited? Well, for one, the 193 horsepower at 13,000 RPM and 82.5 lb-ft of torque at 9,750 RPM, while only weighing 455.3 pounds with a full tank of gas. The super Beemer has the most horsepower and best power-to-weight ratio of all 1000 cc bikes available for the consumers. BMW S 1000 RR can be equipped with ABS and Dynamic Traction Control systems. As a curiosity, the ABS system weighs only 5.51 lbs.

Facing various riding conditions such as wet roads (”Rain”), regular road conditions (”Sport”), a race track with supersport tyres (”Race”), or a race track with slicks (”Slick”), the rider also has the choice of various engine characteristics and set-ups available at the touch of a button. There’s also an HP Gearshift Assistant that will allow for full-power clutchless upshifts.

As far as the design, it is all you could expect from a BMW and it differentiates itself from the crowd by offering asymmetrical headlights, loved by some Beemer fans but equally hated by others.

2009 BMW 550i vs. 2010 Jaguar XF - Tested on track

Back in October, Andrew posed a question about wether the new 2010 Jaguar XF could compete with the BMW 5  Series. The answers from you were mixed and most of them were solely based on the design of the two cars and especially, the interior comfort. Since we haven’t driven the Jaguar XF, it was difficult for us to asses it from a performance point of view, but today, we might have an answer for you.

2010 Jaguar XF vs BMW 550i

The fellows at InsideLine decided to break the usual design-to-design comparisons and took the two cars to the track.

To see just how close, we brought back a 2009 BMW 550i to see how the new Jag stacks up when it’s not getting help from a supercharger. Given that the BMW is giving up 25 hp and 20 lb-ft of torque, we expected a close contest - and got one.

So here are some of the results and you can read their conclusion on Edmunds InsideLine:

BMW Project i: The Clever concept

Under their Project i, BMW are now working on new two- and three-wheelers...
Pics: iMotor, via AutoblogGreen

According to a report on iMotor, BMW are developing new battery-powered two- and three-wheelers that will be eco-friendly and fun to ride. These vehicles are being developed under BMW’s Project i, which is aimed at sustainable mobility in the (near?) future.
One of the proposals being considered by BMW is the three-wheeled ‘Clever’ concept, which the German company has co-developed with the Bath University. According to BMW, this tilting trike will deliver the thrills of a motorcycle but would not require the rider to wear a helmet. Top speed for this two-seater trike would be around 100km/h and it would be easy to ride and park.
For the Clever concept, BMW is experimenting with compressed natural gas (CNG) and lithium-ion batteries. The idea is to find the right balance between range, performance, longevity and environment-friendliness. According to a BMW spokesperson, the company will have a production-ready version of the Clever concept within the next five years

Spy Photos: 2010 BMW X6 Hybrid

The upcoming 2010 BMW X6 Hybrid has been spotted again near Spartanburg by our close friend Palbay. We have recently saw the X6 ActiveHybrid at the Detroit Auto Show where we learned that it will go on sale by the end of this year.

Compared to the previous spy photos that showed us the X6 in darker colors, this time, we seem to have here the official single color that will be available for the X6 Hybrid. We mentioned in our previous article that the Hybrid SAC will be available in one color only, similar to the one we have seen at previous auto shows, a light blue paint.

2010-bmw-x6-hybrid

The BMW X6 is a two-mode hybrid based on an 8-cylinder gasoline engine which has been custom-made to meet the requirements of an SAV. The system uses a modular hybrid system which can be adapted to many different engine/vehicle combination, as opposed to a design-specific petrol engine/hybrid combination, which sees wider use in the automotive industry.

The X6 ActiveHybrid will  have discrete modes for high-torque, low speed driving as well as for high-speed cruises. The two-mode hybrid uses about 20 percent less fuel than than a comparable vehicle with combustion engine.

The BMW X6 Hybrid will be launched at the end of this year as a 2010 model joining the BMW 7 Series Hybrid which will go on sale around the same time.

How To Care For Your BMW Convertible Top

BMW ConvertibleOver the past decade or so, a number of beautiful BMW convertibles have came onto the market. In the past, drivers had to deal with the hassle of manual convertible tops; when they wanted the top down, they had to get out of the car and put it down themselves. Today, every BMW convertible top is power electric (Z3, Z4, Z8, 335ic, e30, M3, etc.) which makes the user-friendliness and allure of their cars only more appealing.

If you own a late model M3 or a BMW Z4 convertible, you probably won’t need to worry about replacing your canvas top anytime soon. Fortunately, they manufacture high quality tops that you should be able to get years of use from. However, if your car is from a few years back, such as a BMW Z3, it may be time for a replacement. Even if there are no tears or rips, the UV rays can fade the fabric over time. This is why it’s so important to park your car in a shaded area (ideally a garage) whenever possible. Not only will this help protect your convertible top, but also it will help protect your paint from premature aging. However it’s not only the sun you need to worry about, but also snow, hail, freezing temperatures, and other extreme weather.

Here are 3 quick tips to extend the life of your BMW convertible top, whatever year or model it may be:

  1. Cleanliness. Just as this is true for the exterior paint, the same applies to your convertible top. Never let any sediment stay on it for an extended period of time. A thorough car wash once per week would be ideal if it’s a daily driver.
  2. Garages. Whenever possible, keep your BMW convertible top shaded from the sun, even if that means using a car cover. Not only do UV rays prematurely age your skin, but your car’s canvas top too!
  3. Protect. There’s ongoing debates about the effectiveness of so-called convertible top protectors. However, they probably can’t hurt, can they? It’s only spending a few extra bucks once in a while to buy a bottle of convertible top protectant from Autozone or Kragens, so you might as well do it.

2010 BMW 5-Series Touring Sheds its Camo and Reveals Interior

Our spy photographers have outdone themselves this time capturing some of the very first photographs of the all-new 2010 BMW 5-Series' interior as well as of the Touring model's exterior without the obtrusive coat of riveted dummy panels seen in the previous prototypes. Both the sedan and Touring versions of the car are expected to arrive in 2010 and will share much of their appearance with the 5-Series GT fastback, otherwise known as the PAS, that will break cover this fall at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September.

2009 G-Power BMW M6 Hurricane CS

(from G-Power Press Release) World record: BMW Coupe with a top speed of 370 km/h. Creating the ultimate BMW, nothing less was the set target for the G-POWER engineers when they started to design 2009 G-POWER BMW M6 HURRICANE CS. The starting basis for this project is the currently most exclusive model in the BMW product range, the BMW M6. Due to the combination of this fantastic basis with the technical innovative products of G-POWER, it was able to create a sports car of superlatives. Powered by a V10 SK III RS twin-supercharger engine with 750 hp / 552 kW, which enabled the G-POWER world record car to achieve a top speed of 367,4 km/h, the G-POWER M6 HURRICANE CS has got what it takes to be a member of the super car league.
2009 G-Power BMW M6 Hurricane CS-12009 G-Power BMW M6 Hurricane CS-2

Further characteristics of the G-POWER M6 HURRICANE CS is the multipart widebody kit, the high performance Carbon-Ceramic break system, the individually adjustable suspension kit and last but not least the nifty 21 inch G-POWER wheels with MICHELIN tyres. After the G-POWER M5 HURRICANE RS broke the world record for the fastest sedan, G-POWER developed this idea to use this potential to build the world’s fastest BMW coupe, the G-POWER M6 HURRICANE CS.
For this project, the redesigned twin supercharger system of the world record car for the fast-revving V10 was used. Compared to the standard system, both belt-driven ASA T1-313 superchargers, each providing charge air for one cylinder bank, were replaced by larger ASA T1-316 models. They have the capacity to increase the volume of charge air by up to 25 percent but only a fraction of that was utilized in this engine. The air volume these chargers are capable of would theoretically be sufficient for a rated power output in excess of 900 hp.
The inner workings of the ten-cylinder four-valve engine are optimized with forged high-performance pistons from Mahle that reduce compression. They have been precisely matched for weight and are much stronger than their production counterparts. The production piston rods and pins also had to make way for special components that can handle the much higher forces.
Further optimized mapping of the engine electronics also contributes to the increased power output of 750 hp / 552 kW, available between 7,500 and 8,000 rpm. The engine delivers its peak torque of 800 Nm at 5,000 rpm. The G-POWER M6 HURRICANE CS sets new performance records not just for top speed with more than 370 km/h. With sprint times of less than 4.4 seconds from rest to 100 km/h, 9.6 seconds to 200 km/h and 26 seconds to 300 km/h the nearly two-ton coupe is at the head of the pack in these categories as well.
The G-POWER M6 HURRICANE CS can be ordered as a complete car starting at 360.000 Euros.

The world's fastest BMW coupe? 230 mph G-Power M6 Hurricane CS

The G-Power crew is constantly striving to produce the most insane BMWs on the planet, combining forced induction with thoroughly revised suspensions and aerodynamics to attain completely unreasonable speeds. It's latest creation, the BMW M6 Hurricane CS, takes the standard set by its M5-based Hurricane RS, and straps a duo of superchargers onto the 5.0-liter V10, boosting the coupe's output to 740 hp and 590 lb-ft of torque.
Combined with a remapped ECU and a titanium exhaust, along with carbon fiber seats and a few other tweaks to reduce the curb weight by around 100 pounds, the CS can run to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds, to 124 mph in 9.6 seconds, 187 in 26 seconds and on to a claimed top speed of 230 mph – making it the fastest road-going BMW coupe on Earth.
In addition to the twin superchargers and bespoke body-kit, G-Power fitted the CS with carbon ceramic brakes at all four corners, with the front discs measuring in at 380mm and clamped by six-piston calipers. A coil-over suspension with nine adjustable settings joins front and rear anti-roll bars, and for a scant 390,000 euros, it can be yours. All the details can be found in the press release below the fold.

BMW G-Power M6 Hurricane CS

World record: G-POWER introduces fastest BMW Coupe with a top speed of 370 km/hCreating the ultimate BMW, nothing less was the set target for the G-POWER engineers when they started to designe the G-POWER M6 HURRICANE CS.
Further characteristics of the G-POWER M6 HURRICANE CS is the multipart widebody kit, the high performance Carbon-Ceramic break system, the individually adjustable suspension kit and last but not least the nifty 21 inch G-POWER wheels with MICHELIN tyres.
After the G-POWER M5 HURRICANE RS broke the world record for the fastest sedan, G-POWER developed this idea to use this potential to build the world's fastest BMW coupe, the G-POWER M6 HURRICANE CS.
For this project, the redesigned twin supercharger system of the world record car for the fastrevving V10 was used.
The pre-compressed air from both superchargers is cooled for maximum power yield in a dualflow water-to-air intercooler painted G-POWER orange. This sophisticated cast-aluminum component replaces the stock airbox above the engine. Because of its close proximity to the engine it produces the same instant throttle response as the production engine, albeit with considerably more torque.
The inner workings of the ten-cylinder four-valve engine are optimized with forged highperformance pistons from Mahle that reduce compression.
Two tons and a top speed of 370 km/h naturally place extreme demands on the tires, which were mounted on G-POWER light-alloy wheels. Technology partner Michelin provided highperformance Pilot Sport PS2 tires in sizes 255/35 ZR 19 in front and 305/30 ZR 19 on the rear axle.
These tires were the only ones capable of handling the extreme stress. In everyday driving the GPOWER M6 HURRICANE CS runs on 21-inch Silverstone Diamond wheels with size 255/30 ZR 21 and 295/25 ZR 21 tires, due to the capacity of the tires the top speed has to be limited to 340 km/h, than.
In addition to the most powerful BMW engine ever to power a street-legal BMW, favorable aerodynamic properties were of elementary importance. The needed body kit has to fulfill to function at once. First of all it has to generate enough down force to keep the G-POWER M6 HURRICANE CS on the ground at speeds of more than 300 km/h and secondly it responsible for transform the standard BMW M6 into a super sports car.
That is why G-POWER designed a unique widebodykit made entirely from carbon fibre. In addition to producing the desired downforce it is also designed to supply much more cooling air. It consists of front apron, bonnet with vents, rocker panels, wheel arche attachments, rear aprons with diffusor and a rear spoiler wing.
At the same time G-POWER puts the BMW M6 on a diet and makes it lose weight bit by bit. The biggest share is taken by the G-POWER complete exhaust system made entirely form titan which lets the dynamic back pressure drop just like the weight. 24 kg are saved compared to the standard exhaust system.
In the vehicle interior G-POWER switches the standard front seats against racing seats made from carbon fibre, which ensure a perfect support for the drive in its fight against the centrifugal forces. Of course these seats are lighter than the standard seats as well and again the M6 has lost 24 kg.
Weight neutral, but not without effects is the G-POWER suspension package CLUBSPORT. It optimizes the road handling of the G-POWER M6 HURRICANE CS to perfection and is consisting of the continuously height-adjustable G-POWER coil-over RS suspension with nine selectable settings each for bound and rebound and the G-POWER anit-roll-bar kit for front and rear axle.
The option list of the G-POWER M6 HURRICANE CS ends with a true highlight: a Carbon-Ceramic break system with 6-piston calibres and brake discs with 380 mm in diameter. 2009 BMW 750i

The BMW 7 Series and the Mercedes-Benz S-class are two vehicles utterly defined by their birthplace. Each was spawned in Southern Germany, where massive stretches of autobahn honed their ability to cover boundless distances at high velocities, cosseting occupants in Teutonic luxury. But they're decidedly different beasts. In spite of their similarities, the two brands have always had distinct personalities. BMW followed its tag-line of the "Ultimate Driving Machine," while Mercedes stuck to its more sober image, focusing on its "Best in German engineering" meme.
As so often happens, automakers feel compelled to grow and expand beyond traditional audiences, and at times, the result is a diluted product that strays from its roots. When everyone is attempting to cater to the broadest possible audience, overlap is inevitable and distinctions begin to disappear. Look no further than the American mid-size sedan segment, or in this case, the last generation 7-series. So for 2009, BMW sought to re-focus its uber-sedan on what it does best. Read on to find out if BMW succeeded or if the new 7 suffers from further dilution.

2009 BMW 750i

It seems fitting that BMW's flagship would lead the way in introducing new design directions for the brand. The previous fourth-generation model marked the debut of the controversial Chris Bangle era. The Bangle 7 may not have received much in the way of critical acclaim for its aesthetics, but it was the best-selling generation to date, and its distinct styling cues have found their way into many other vehicles. Even with a mid-cycle refresh that significantly improved its looks, the fourth-gen. model still suffered from a top-heavy appearance that diverged from the lower, sleeker looks of earlier editions. This latest edition marks a return to form for BMW.While Bangle remained the titular head of BMW design during the course of the 7 Series development, his successor, Adrian van Hooydonk, led the team that created this new version. The result is a sedan with virtually the same dimensions as the last 7, but with an additional three-inches of wheelbase. Despite the stretch in the middle, the new car looks significantly smaller thanks to a slopping nose and contoured flanks that lend a tauter, more muscular appearance.
Our first experience with the new 7 Series involved time in an extended wheelbase, sport pack-equipped 750Li. This time, our tester is a standard wheelbase 750i. Currently, the only engine available in the U.S. market 7-series is the 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 that debuted last year in the X6. However, just before our test, BMW announced a new V12-powered 760 that will find its way to the States later this year, while buyers in other parts of the world have a choice of gas or diesel mills.
With its 400 hp and 450 lb-ft of torque at just 1,800 rpm, the turbo V8 is an ideal power-plant for a big luxury sedan. It's only available with a ZF six-speed automatic transmission, as for the overwhelming majority of people who choose a 7 as their preferred conveyance, a manually-operated clutch wouldn't find favor. But that's not to say the 750i isn't suited to fast driving. On the contrary, even without the sport package, the 7 feels surprisingly nimble for a 4,500 pound vehicle. To the left of the shift lever is a switch that allows the driver to select from comfort, normal, sport and sport+ modes. Similar to what's found on most other modern vehicles with sport settings, the various modes adjust the response of the electronic throttle, transmission controls, the adaptive damping and the traction/stability control.
In comfort or normal modes, BMW's flagship feels a restrained at first, but a quick switch into one of the sport modes causes the 7 to leap of the line with enough gusto to belie its curb weight. BMW claims a 0-60 mph acceleration of 5.1 seconds for the lighter standard-wheelbase 750, a number consistent with our informal timing and perhaps even slightly conservative. Those who want to manage the shift points on their own can do so by tapping the shifter to the left, followed by the usual fore-aft taps. The transmission responds quickly to driver commands, but without any wheel mounted paddle shifters, the manual mode seems to be of limited value. It's generally best to leave the controller in drive, engage sport or sport+ and let the electronics to the work.
Under braking, the sport modes induce automatic down-shifting to help ensure the engine is in the meat of its powerband, so there's never a chance of being below the curve when powering out of the corners. Accelerating in sport mode, the transmission holds gears after backing off the throttle, allowing the driver to negotiate a series of bends without hunting for gears. Of course, even though the 7 is capable of traversing winding roads at elevated velocities, its natural habitat is the autobahn or interstate. Here, a squeeze of the go-pedal will find the 750's speedometer swinging clockwise at an alarming rate.
From a 70 mph cruise, dipping into the long pedal will have you in extra-legal speeds in decidedly undramatic fashion. Wind and road noise are well controlled thanks to the triple seals on the doors and acres of insulation elsewhere. At part throttle, the V8 is just audible enough that you can tell it's running, but it's never intrusive. Get on it hard though and an aggressive snarl begins to build. Even then, the 750 never forgets that it is a luxury sedan rather than a hardcore sports car.
Smaller BMWs have been lauded for their steering feel, and while the big sedan doesn't quite measure up to the 3 Series standard, it never feels loose or sloppy. The weighting provides just the right amount of resistance while providing feedback commensurate with the amount of lateral force being generated by the front tires. When maneuvering around tight spaces, the optional camera package on our tester came in handy. Pressing the camera button on the console toggles the massive 10.2-inch dash-mounted LCD to display the surrounds courtesy of two side-view cameras mounted just above the side markers on the leading edge of the front wheel wells.
The front seats of the 750 offer excellent comfort and lateral support, with the driver's seat benefiting from multiple power adjustments including the side bolsters that can be optimized to the width of your torso. When the door is opened, the bolsters automatically retract making it easier to get in an out, and the $2,500 luxury seating package includes a massage mode for the driver's seat as well as heating for the rear seats and steering wheel. Even in the standard wheelbase 7, the distance between the axles spans nearly 121 inches, meaning there's plenty of room in the rear compartment for three passengers. Of course, the usual caveats about the center position remain in place, including limited leg room around the center tunnel and the raised cushion which is optimally contoured for only two occupants.
Typical among modern luxury cars, every generation of the 7 Series adds more features and more fluff. Since all the added accouterments need a central control interface to avoid an overwhelming number of buttons, switches and dials, BMW led the charge with the implementation of iDrive on the last 7. Unfortunately, BMW apparently completely forgot about human usability and the result was a disaster. When the mid-cycle refresh of the 7 debuted, BMW added a few switches back into the mix to provide shortcuts to the main menu and other frequently used features. The new, third-generation system that debuted on the refreshed 3 Series last fall as well as the new 7 is vastly improved. The menu structure is much easier and intuitive to navigate, but it's still not quite as good as the interface offered by its closest competitors, not to mention some contemporary Fords.
So is the 7-series back on track? Most definitely. The 750i is a pleasure to drive and its responses belie its dimensions. For those that live in regions where roads are less than stellar, the absence of the sport pack is less of an issue. The adaptive damping system keeps the body level and unperturbed whether the pavement is pock-marked or curvy, and its surprisingly satisfying on all manner of roads. Of course, in typical German fashion, the price starts high and escalates quickly with the addition of options. Our tester had a base price of $80,300, but premium sound systems, seating, camera and convenience packages drove that up to an out-the-door price of $92,170. If you can manage those payments, the 750i's 16/22 mpg thirst for premium gasoline shouldn't be a bother, and for the money, you'd be hard-pressed to find a more willing and eager luxury sedan to consume acres of asphalt with ease.

BMW Z2 will bring to Frankfurt

Again there was an information that concern BMW will officially present in September on a motor show in Frankfurt the distressful budgetary roadster Z2.
In spite of the fact that we have till now only the most general data on this car, there are bases to believe that it will be based on the same platform, as following generation of the first series. Constructed with use of last achievements in the field of creation of easy materials, this roadster will weigh less than 1000 kg and can brag of excellent profitability.
As a power-plant to buyers for certain will suggest to choose one of four-cylinder engines, engaging those 1,6-litre motors which are established on MINI. BMW 3rd series has received a new bodi kit from LUMMA Design!

Engineers BMW have started testing of following generation of a coupe of 3rd series, but studio LUMMA Design urges motorists not to wait, while in the market there will be a novelty, and instead to finish the present model.
Tuning studio LUMMA Design has developed for coupe BMW of 3rd series a new bodi-kit which will fresh appearance of the car. For the moderate sum experts are ready to establish on two-door model the rear "apron", the new exterior mirrors partially executed from cardon, a modesty panel, lateral "skirts" with bores for air, two rear spoilers and the branch pipes of an exhaust system covered with chrome. All it will manage to the potential buyer in the sum hardly more €3 thousand, writes Carscoop. For those to whom the bank account allows, company LUMMA Design suggests to establish on the car sports light-alloy disks dimension of 20 inches (€4,900) and new extralight front fenders with "the gills", similar to that are established on the cars which have passed operational development in M-branch BMW.

BMW Touring 2010

After a considerable quantity of espionage photos of sedan BMW of 5th Series, it is again noticed BMW Touring. In the same way as well as the brother, a sedan, Touring should go on sale not earlier than 2010. For today the only thing that is available about BMW Touring 5th Series, is a set of informal specifications.
It is known that the model will prepare in territory of Europe and Germany it becomes quite probable the first market on which will arrive Touring in 2010. It is expected that the car will correspond to new European safety regulations, the new design of a body becomes the best example of it. For example, BMW will leave a former kind of a radiator enclosure which became for a long time already a mark distinctive feature, but the length of the most front part that will entail also wheelbase reduction approximately on 10 centimetres will be reduced. But along with it the width of the car will be increased, the height in comparison with existing models becomes a bit more low. The project in the company known as "F10", having status following generation BMW which will be equipped with 2.5 litre engine V-6, 4.8 l. V-8 and if it is not enough of it, 5.0 l. V-10 will add a ruler of accessible motors. Optionally will be offered 18 and 19-inch disks as 17-inch will enter into a standard complete set.

Official pricing for BMW X5M and X6M leaks out

The BMW X5M and X6M are all about excess. Excess power (if that's possible), excess girth, and, as we already knew, excess cost. BimmerFile is reporting that the X5M will ding your budget to the tune of $85,400, while the X6M will set you back $88,900. And anyone that has ever priced out a Bimmer with options knows that those prodigious figures are only the baseline of what will no doubt be two even more expensive BMWs.
But for nearly $90,000, you get what, for now, are the two most powerful BMWs on the road. Both models will reap the benefits of a 555 hp, 500 lb-ft twin turbo 4.4L V8. That's 55 hp and 105 lb-ft more than the M5 or M6; two vehicles that cost more than their crossover counterparts. The M treatment will also add more aggressive aesthetics, torque-vectoring AWD, and massive 15.6 inch front rotors to help these flying bricks stop on a dime (or 900,000 dimes, really). Does that make the X5M and X6M a compelling value? If you're in the market for a 550 hp crossover, we guess so, because outside of the substantially more expensive Porsche Cayenne Turbo S ($124,000) these new Bimmers are the only other family-haulers with that kind of muscle.

The new BMW 760Li

New flagship model with first ever BMW twin-turbo V12 engine and first eight-speed automatic transmission

BMW’s new flagship model will launch in September and feature two world debuts. The BMW 760Li will be powered by an all new 5,972cc twin-turbocharged V12 engine and be the first BMW production car to feature the marque’s new eight-speed automatic transmission, offering outstanding levels of performance and refinement in the premium segment.

At its heart, the new all-aluminium V12 engine produces 544hp at 5,250rpm and 750 Nm of torque from just 1,500rpm through to 5,000rpm, delivering over 100hp and 150 Nm of torque more than the previous model. This equates to a zero to 62mph time of 4.6 seconds and an electronically-limited top speed of 155mph – a performance which eclipses many sports cars, yet delivered with effortless tranquillity.

Helping to transfer such prodigious performance to the road is a new eight-speed automatic transmission offering effortless in-gear performance. The unique eight speed configuration is achieved without gaining in size or weight over the former traditional six-speed transmission. This innovative arrangement, incorporating four simple gearsets and five gear change elements, ensures that only two clutches are open in each gear at any one time, significantly reducing frictional losses.

The BMW X6 from HARTGE - the new crossover dimension

Two ton diesel sprinter with a top speed of 256 km/h
Herbert Hartge and his team have pushed the skilful stylistic blend of a four-wheel drive vehicle from the SAV segment (below the waistline) and a coupé (above it) into a new dimension. His X6 xDrive35d is more than an extraordinary symbiosis of a high-street thoroughbred and a crossover workhorse. Although the diesel engine with Twin turbocharger is already the most powerful in its class, the specialists from Germany's Saarland region have breathed on the power plant so it now generates no less than 241 kW (328 hp) at 4400 rpm and a mighty 675 Nm of torque low down at 2000 rpm. At the same time, the emissions remain well within limits for such a powerful vehicle at 220 g/km. Indeed, the X6 xDrive35d from HARTGE uses half a litre less diesel per 100 kilometres than its series counterpart under comparable conditions. Equally impressive are the performance figures. Despite a weight of 2,185 kg, the X6 takes only six seconds to reach 100 km/h and is thus significantly quicker off the mark than the standard xDrive35d (6.9 sec.). The maximum speed - there is no electronic limiter on the HARTGE model - has been measured at 256 km/h.

2009 Hartge BMW X6

Visually underscoring the concentrated power hidden beneath the bonnet is the HARTGE aerodynamic kit in high quality PUR-RIM material. Wheel-arch extensions linked by side sills provide sufficient room for the HARTGE suspension, which includes a set of sports springs with or without level-control system for the rear axle and lowering by 30 mm, and the company's "CLASSIC 2" wheels (10.5 x 22" offset 33 at the front and 12 x 22" offset 23 at the back).
These attractive aluminium wheels are fitted with ultra-wide tyres (295 / 30 ZR 22 at the front and 335 / 25 ZR 22 at the rear). Rounding off the kit are a front spoiler and a rear skirt with an integrated diffuser while carbon casings for the exterior mirrors, stainless-steel tail pieces with quadrilateral tail pipes (large version) left and right for the exhaust system, HARTGE emblems and insignia emphasize the individual outfit of this X6.
The interior is dominated by a sporting atmosphere a la HARTGE. Via the HARTGE 3-spoke leather steering wheel with carbon inserts - alternatively, carbon steering-wheel covers are available - the driver's glance falls on a 300 km/h speedometer and rev counter with dials in silver metallic and red needles. Plenty of room for personal touches to the "interior architecture" of the X6 is given by a variety of accessories including decor and interior trim, carbon parts for the dashboard and consoles, aluminium foot rest and pedal set, as well as black velour foot and load-area mats.
A full HARTGE conversion for the X6 xDrive35d - including fitment and painting work - costs EUR 29,353.94 including 19% VAT. Naturally, all parts can also be retrofitted individually.
